Day 12 – On this day, the Americans won the Silver Medal in the Nordic Combined 4 x 5 kmrelay. Team members were Brett Camerota, Todd Lodwick, Johnny Spillane and Bill Demong. Austria won the Gold and Germany took the Bronze. No other American team won a medal on this day.
A singular event occurred on this day however. In the Ladies’ Figure Skating Short Program, Canadian Joannie Rochette was in third place at the finish of the program. Joannie’s mother Therese had died of a heart attack in Vancouver two days prior to the Short Program. With the advice of her father Normand and her coach, Joannie decided to skate the Short Program to honor her best friend, her mother. Her third place finish was remarkable considering what she was going through. Kim Nu-Ya of Korea skated a flawless Short Program to come in first and Mao Asada of Japan came in second. The Free Skating Portion of the Program will be shown on Day 14.
Day 13 – The First Run of the Ladies Giant Slalom was held in spite of six inches of fresh snow and poor visibility for up to three flags. In addition, due to time constraints and the bad weather, it was decided to send a skier down the hill before the previous skier had finished. This had a disastrous result. Lindsey Vonn fell just prior to finishing her race, sliding over to the side of the hill. Her teammate Julia Mancuso came barreling down the hill in an excellent position before noting the yellow flag which commanded her to stop. Julia was given a rerun in which she came in 18th, far behind what she had been achieving in her first run. Tears were shed and dreams were shattered. Lindsey suffered a broken thumb plus a shattered dream herself.
Ice Hockey – Men’s Playoffs Quarterfinals – The United States vs. Switzerland. Ryan Suter of the U.S. scored first with a questionable goal which was resolved in favor of the United States. Zach Parise legitimized the American win by scoring a second goal to shut out Switzerland 2-0.
Women’s Bobsleigh – Heat 4 – The Canadian Women’s Team took both the Gold and the Silver Medal, while the U.S. Team of Erin Pac and Elana Meyers won the Bronze Medal in Bobsleigh.
The Short Track Ladies 3000 meter relay was won by China with Canada winning the Silver Medal and the United States winning the Bronze Medal.
Day 13 saw the United States total medal count at 30 with Germany in second place with 26.
