Proving that there are still people with courage, a teacher stopped a would-be school shooter. Math teacher David Benke stopped a shooter after he only got two rounds off. “You know it bugs me that he got off another round,” Benke was quoted as saying. Benke doesn’t consider himself to be a hero for stopping the shooter. Of course that is the first trait of heroes; they don’t believe they are special.
P. Soloman Banda, an Associated Press writer, has posted an article in the Associated Press titled, “Teacher tackles gunman suspected in school shooting.”
Mr. Benke wasted no time in reacting to the situation. He heard a “pop,” which he thought might be a firecracker. He was monitoring the parking lot at Deer Creek Middle School in Littleton, Colo. It is a little eerie that this school is just a few miles from Columbine High School. Mr. Benke moved towards the sound thinking perhaps he would have to tell a student to “Stop it!”
What he saw was not the thrower of a firecracker but a man with a rifle who was preparing to shoot again. Before the teacher could get to him he got a second round off. However at that point, the gunman, Bruce Stongeagle Eastwood, was tackled. Benke took him to the ground and wrapped himself around the man’s arms and legs. He was quickly joined by another teacher who took the rifle.
Unfortunately the rounds hit two students. Both had surgery. One was treated and released, and the other’s condition is not known.
Benke tried to calm the shooter down as they struggled to no avail. As it turns out Eastwood has a history of DUI, domestic violence and robbery. His father indicated he has a history of “hearing voices.”
Benke was obviously moved and disappointed by the fact that he couldn’t prevent the second shot. He was hailed as a hero by local police authorities, and while extremely humbled and thankful, took no part in echoing their kudos.
David Benke has a special family at home with a 13-year-old daughter and seven-year-old twins.
When I was in high school there was a person who caused a great deal of trouble as they beat up a student. They were destined to become a well-known criminal. as they went through the halls “crowing” not a teacher had the courage to do anything and they weren’t armed.
David Benke is a hero.
