Creationism is a firm belief in God as He who created all forms of life: the universe, the planets; plants; animals and most importantly, man. Creationists, such as those defeated by the Kansas School Board in 2007, reject all theories of evolution, a theory based on scientific research stating all forms of life are constantly adapting, changing; in fact, evolving to meet the challenges posed by an ever-changing environment over a long period of time. Perhaps the best example of a living organism evolving to meet the challenge of a changing environment can be found in simple viruses. Viruses such as Swine Flu, HIV and Hepatitis are living organisms constantly evolving into stronger viral forms in their effort to resist anti-viral drugs and so, survive. So, what is one to believe?
Charles Darwin is the father of the theory of evolution, which first and foremost, recognizes each species natural instinct to survive. All living things are composed of DNA, the blueprint of every life form, be it a banana, a housefly, or, a human. Our DNA can be thought of as the tiniest computer known to man and all the information collected over the course of a lifetime, regardless of the length of such a life-time is passed on to the offspring where it sits in a newborns DNA. Darwin believes humanity initially evolved from the ape and all forms of life came from the sea.
Creationists reject Darwin and embrace the teaching of the bible. In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day. -Genisis 1 : 1-5. On the sixth day, God created all forms of life including Adam and Eve.
To reject Darwin and scientific theory is to subscribe the mind to ignorance. One cannot prove beyond the shadow of a doubt, all forms of life did not, in fact, evolve from simple life forms. To reject God, however, is of equal ignorance. Perhaps there is a divine power responsible for creating all forms of life. In response to the instinct to survive, all forms of life evolved into the living forms that occupy our planet, today. If so, God endowed us with the very lives we live and the intelligence we use to find the very reason for our existence. We have been blessed with life, the ability to think, to reason and to freely choose what it is we believe. It is up to God to take from us the life he has given us, the thoughts and ideals He has blessed us with; the music we create; the arts we enjoy and the wonder of Science, ever striving to prolong our future while continuing its gaze upon the past.
