Create this adorable one of a kind purse for yourself or to give as a gift. The idea came from my sister in law June, and I call it my noisy purse. It is made from a rectangle of fabric, fishing swivels and buttons. Carried over the shoulder the buttons jingle and jangle as one moves, hence the name “The Noisy Purse”. Regardless of the name I receive compliments anytime I wear it. This is a great project for tweens or teen girls.
You will need:
Fabric of your choice, depending upon the size of the purse. I used a piece of fabric 10 inches wide and 20 inches long. Cut off a strip the length of the fabric to use to decorate the shoulder strap.
Fishing swivels, find these in your husbands fishing tackle box, with his permission of course, or at the fishing department at your favorite outdoor store. Bass Pro Shop sells a 15 package of swivels online for $1.99, or they have a great 150 box assortment for $5.99. (Prices subjected to change). Visit them at www.bassproshops.com I used 40 swivels, but it depends how long you want the shoulder strap.
Buttons, buttons and more buttons of different sizes. Choose an assortment of buttons in different colors and designs. The larger buttons are used along the shoulder strap and the smaller ones are used to dangle for decoration. Check you second hand store for buttons, or fabric supply store. A great online source for buttons is www.cuteasabutton.com. They offer a huge supply of buttons and if one was creating a theme purse, maybe hearts or fish, this would be the place to find the buttons.
Sewing thread to match the color of the fabric and a sewing needle. This can also be created without sewing by using iron on hem tape. Just follow the directions on the package.
Begin by stitching the fabric, right sides together, on three sides, leaving the opening at the top of the bag. This can be done by hand or by machine. Turn the top edge inside 2 inches and hem along the edge. When finished turn right side out. This should resemble a pillow case.
To make the shoulder strap begin hooking together fishing swivels and buttons to form a long chain. Add additional fish swivels, hanging off from the chain with smaller buttons for decoration. When the shoulder strap/fish swivel strap is the desired length, stitch the ends onto to purse securely. Tear or cut remaining strip or fabric into 2-3 inch strips and tie along the shoulder strap for decorations.
Your purse is now ready to wear, make noise and draw compliments.
