My grandmother has had a computer in her house for over a decade, and worked with one for over two decades. Yet I have to guide her through her email every time. I think the problem is she just doesn’t work on it enough, usually what she is looking for is right in front of her.
Passwords and user ID: For you to have an email account, or any other account, you will have a password, and what’s called a user ID. For you to be able to get into your account will have to type them in correctly, both are case sensitive and such. so write them down and put it in a safe place. This was one of my grandmother’s biggest problems starting out. She was determined that she was just going to remember her information, and as a result always got it wrong. I finally convinced her to write down her user ID and password, and I haven’t had to create her a new account in over two years.
Attaching a photo to an email: Yahoo. First sign into you account and click “New,” this will open up a new email. Go ahead and type in your friends email address, subject and text.
Click on “Attach” icon in the upper left and this will open up your files.
Select the photo you want to send and click on the “open” icon.
The photo is now attached to your email.
If you want to remove the attached photo, click “remove”. It’s right next to it. You can send more than one at a time.
You can also do the same thing with written documents, just always be sure of what it is you’re sending.
Money On line: Doing business on line means financial transactions either from a credit card or bank account. And we all know that nothing is totally secure on the Internet. I steered clear of this for many years, however lately it became critical for me to have some sort of way to handle money on line. For this, I opened up a bank account just for this. I only keep a small amount of cash in it at a time to thwart any theft- no hacker, or thief is going to do all that work then blow their cover for a couple bucks. But if they actually did then I wouldn’t be out much and I would know my security was breached. When I want to shop on line, all I gotta do is add funds beforehand.
Opening a sticky disk drive: Over the years things will go bad on a computer or hard drive. On mine it started with the disk drive slot. It takes forever to open it by pushing the button, it takes about thirty thousand fast clicks and I start feeling dirty while doing it. However I found that if I leave a disk in it all the time it will open right up on the first click. Not sure why that is but I will tell you what I did to get it open when clicking the open/close drive button wouldn’t work.
1) Right click the mouse on the START icon at the bottom of the computer screen if you use Windows.
2) Left click on “explore” with your mouse. This will bring up your start menu.
3) On the left there will be a list of programs and files and such. Scroll down to “DVD-RW DRIVE”.
4) Right click on DVD-RW Drive and then left click “Eject”. This opened it up with the first click, but took me a couple of clicks every time after that. Now I just leave a dick in it at all times.
Instant Messengers: Instant messaging is a great way to keep in contact with friends and family far away. You can not only chat with them in real time, but also share photos, links, videos and view each other on a web cam. I have a few instant messengers, but I use yahoo most so lets go with that. Step by step I will tell you what you need to do.
1) You will need a yahoo email account.
2) Download Yahoo Instant Messenger. Once it is finished downloading, follow the prompts and you will probably have to restart your computer.
3) Once your computer has restarted, find “Yahoo Messenger” after clicking the Windows START button on the lower left. Double click on the “Yahoo Messenger” icon and wait a second or two while it loads.
4) Once yahoo messenger has loaded, enter your yahoo ID and password- you do not need to enter @yahoo.com at the end of your ID*.
5) Click “Sign in”.
Once you are signed into yahoo messenger, you will want to add contacts. Here is how you will do that.
Click on “contacts” at the top of your messenger box. A list will pop up.
Click “Add a contact”. Another box will pop up.
Type the yahoo ID or email address of the person you wish to add.
Select the group you’d like to add your contact to. (“Friends,” the default group, adds the name to your main Messenger List.) You can also add a message, if you like, so they’ll know who you are.
Note: The contact is automatically notified and given the option to allow or deny your add request. If the contact denies your request, they won’t appear in your Messenger List.
How to send an instant message:
Once you have contacts added to your yahoo list all you will have to do is double click their photo or icon and the chat box will pop up.
Type your message.
Note: If your friend is offline, they won’t receive your message until the next time they sign in, unless they’re set to mobile.
You can send a message to a cell phone from messenger: Just click “actions” at the top of your yahoo messenger contact list and select “send an sms message”, then enter their cell number, including area code.
You can host a conference: Click on “actions” at the top of your yahoo contact list. Select “invite to conference”. Then just click on the names of the people you want to invite. Now everyone can chat at once!
