The American Animal Hospital Association (www.healthypet.com) reports that 80 percent of dogs and 70 percent of cats show signs of oral disease by age three and that dental disease is the cause of many serious health problems in older animals. Obviously, they recommend a regular schedule of teeth cleaning and maintenance care at a vet’s office, along with routine brushing at home, but there are a number of products available that claim to keep your pet’s teeth clean and healthy without the need for your direct intervention. One of these products is the intriguing, natural, herbal dental spray LEBA III
LEBA III (pronounced LEEBA 3), which is produced by LebaLab, Inc in Canada is a spray that is sprayed directly into your pet’s mouth. It is made up of trace elements of the two herbs Rose and Mint stabilized in Ethyl Alcohol and distilled water. It is simple to use, just spray onto your dog’s tongue, and the active ingredients will mix with the saliva and start to work on the teeth and gums. Initially the treatment schedule is twice a day, but after four to six weeks, the maintenance regimen kicks in and the spray is only needed once a day or even less if the effect holds. Each treatment is 1 spray for small dogs and 2 for larger ones and each bottle provides around 240 sprays.
The claim for LEBA III is that it balances the chemistry of the mouth keeping the teeth clean and healthy for the entire life of your pet, without side effects. It is the trace herbal elements that stimulate the enzymes in your pet’s mouth producing a change in the chemistry in the mouth that causes tartar to soften and fall off the teeth. The company’s website (www.lebalab.com) gives details of a clinical double blind study carried out by a vet in Canada that shows an effective result in all the dogs who took part. The photos of major reduction in tartar are particularly effective.
As a dog owner myself, and as the owner of a natural pet supply store I decided to conduct a less rigorous trial myself and try LEBA III on the next ten customers who were looking for a teeth cleaning product for their dogs. My criterion for success was quite simple, how many of the trial participants would return to purchase a second bottle of LEBA III. The results were excellent for a product category that generally doesn’t get tremendous follow through as 5 of the initial 10 participants became ongoing users of LEBA III and reported very noticeable improvement. Indeed, this group have become active advocates for the product and regularly recommend it to their friends.
So in summary, it would seem from both LebaLab information and the first hand experience of my customers that LEBA III is an effective method for keeping your dog’s teeth clean and perhaps reducing the frequency of costly vet teeth cleaning visits, without the need for awkward home brushing. The spray is available from a small number of quality pet supply stores that are listed on the Lebalab site, and a bottle ranges in price from $48.50 to $60.00.
