The weather is beginning to turn warm and that means fishing season is about here. Growing up as a young boy in the Ozarks of Missouri, I learned the value of using a cane pole, for fishing. There were plenty of rod and reels around to use. However, we couldn’t afford that type of gear. So, we learned to use a cane pole. Cane pole fishing is a different type of fishing all together. This article explains how to cane pole fish. To many individuals, this is the purist form of fishing.
A cane pole is made out of bamboo. They come in lengths from six to twenty feet. They are used, because they are very strong and flexible. They also have a long staying power for lasting a long period of time. It is very rare for a pole to break.
The first thing, that you put on your cane pole is a line. When placed on the pole, the line should be at least the same length of the pole. So if you have a 16 foot pole, you have a 16 foot line. If you fish in shallow water, you simply roll the string up around the end of the pole. You can easily adjust your line for the water depth.
Tightening, the string on, is in two places. The first and main tie goes below the second to last bamboo joint. This is the very end of the string. The second tie goes around and below the last joint of the bamboo pole. Both ties must be secure.
Next you place on your cork, weight, hook, and bait on your line.
There are three ways to fish, with a cane pole. They are with a cork, loose line, and tight line. Let’s go through each one. A cork is used to let you know when you have either caught a fish or are getting a bite. It is placed three feet or less above the hook.
Loose line fishing is where you only have a hook and bait on your line. No weight or cork is used. This type of fishing is used in very still water. It is for surface fishing.
Tight line fishing is with everything but a cork. This type of fishing, is for deep water fishing. You are going after fish close to the bottom. Your line is tight from the weight, when it is in the water. The water can be silent or busy for this time of fishing. It is excellent for Catfish.
For bait, you can use worm, minnow, grasshopper, grub, or dough bait.
The great thing, about cane pole fishing, is that it lets you fish easily around down trees and limbs. You can fish high, deep, or on top of the water. It is also very inexpensive. Today, you can buy bamboo and fiberglass cane poles, at most bait shops or sporting good stores like the Bass Pro shop or Cabela’s.
Somethings never change. Cane pole fishing is one of those. It is a form of fishing that purists love.
