Attention Gleeks! For all of you who have ever wanted to form your own Glee club, there is now a way! A new app for the iPhone and iPod Touch lets you sing along to your favourite tracks from the show, record them and share them with the world! As a self confessed Gleek, I couldn’t resist it and I’m here to give you the lowdown on how it all works!
It all begins with Rachel asking you to join her in singing Somebody To Love. Skip it and take a look around first. Read the tutorials and see what it’s all about before you start, it makes things easier.
After you have suitably warmed up your vocal chords, it’s time to sing. Once you have chosen your song you are faced with a new screen where you are able to choose between audio effects. You are given the option to add pitch control, pitch control and harmonize, or no effects.I am quite fond of pitch control and harmonize, it made me sound better but it completely depends on your level of talent.
When that is done, the track begins. You sing along with the words that appear on your screen, like a mini karaoke. The app cleverly tracks your vocal to let you know how good or bad the notes are. If things are going well, little gold stars explode on the screen, though I haven’t seen a lot of that myself yet! As you sing, your voice is recorded and when it’s over you can export your track for the world to hear. There are options to share on Faebook, Twitter and via email.
Another impressive thing about this app is, not only can you share your recordings, but you can listen to others and leave them comments if you so wish. If you have been brave enough to allow your vocal to be listened to, you will get comments back and if you are really lucky, you will collect Gleeks! A gleek is simply someone who liked your singing and it can be quite the addiction to keep checking to see if anyone became your gleek. I have one already!
The other impressive thing about the Glee app is that you can actually form your own Glee club by adding your vocal to someone else’s track. The app then somehow combines the voices and creates something quite unique! It’s a very clever piece of technology and like nothing I have ever seen before. You can form Glee clubs with your friends or make new ones by choosing to form a club with someone you like the sound of. The choices for new friends are endless!
The only slight negative I have is that the Glee app only comes with three songs initially. They are Somebody To Love, You Keep Me Hanging On and Rehab, plus an Acapella option where you can sing whatever you want. However, there is an option to purchase additional songs, all of which can be heard on the Glee soundtracks. There are seven extra tracks in all, but I hope more will be added in time.
In spite of the poor amount of tracks to choose from, this app is one that will keep you entertained for hours as you try to perfect your singing, then get lost in the thousands of tracks already available to listen to. The problem will be trying to put it down! This is an absolute must for all Gleeks out there.
The Glee app can be purcashed through the iTunes Store and costs £1.59 with each extra track costing 59p.
Please note that if you are downloading the Glee app to an iPod Touch you will need a Wi-fi connection and earphones that have a built in microphone.
