Brett Favre went on Jay Leno as part of Leno’s first big week . The Brett Favre on Jay Leno appearance really hinged on one unlikely thing, however. By now, the only reason to talk to Favre in the offseason is to ask about his retirement plans, or lack thereof. However, since it is only March, there’s little reason to expect an answer on that now. So to no one’s surprise, Brett Favre went on Jay Leno and said he hadn’t decided anything yet – his standard answer for most of the last few summers.
The Vikings quarterback made his first public appearance since the NFC championship game loss to the Saints. Since his last pass was an interception that cost Minnesota the game – and possibly an eventual Super Bowl title – it would be a rotten way to end things if he retired. And for the third straight summer, that is the big story of the NFL offseason.
Yet the Brett Favre on Jay Leno interview indicated that another long wait is ahead. In fact, he said he won’t say anything ‘anytime soon’ which won’t make things easier for the Vikings. If he happened to announce his retirement tomorrow, they could immediately look for a new quarterback – perhaps even Donovan McNabb. But if he waits several months and then retires, the Vikings have little time and little options to replace him.
It was still fitting that Favre went on Leno to discuss his state of mind. Both men have proven that they just can’t stay away from their positions, no matter how aggravating it can get. For Favre, he can’t stay away from the NFL, while for Leno, he couldn’t leave The Tonight Show for good either. He even poked fun at both their situations by giving Favre his ‘retirement watch’ from NBC.
Both came out of ‘retirement’ in controversial ways, although Leno only needed one late night war to do it. Favre has dragged his future plans out at least three separate times, and this latest round will be the most dramatic yet. But if he comes back, he might not be able to do this in 2011 – if only because the whole NFL might be on strike.
Of course, the Brett Favre on Jay Leno bit had to fill more time, after his retirement denials. So they also went into the ‘Pants On The Ground’ locker room routine, Favre winning over the Vikings fanbase – for the moment- and his tired legs at the end of the NFC title game.
While Favre heads off for months more of indecision, Leno completes his first big week back by having Morgan Freeman and Meredith Vieira on tonight.
