Botanic gardens are generally well-tended parks displaying a wide range of plants labeled with their botanical names. Crawley II style mansion is nestled amid 200 acres of formal gardens, landscaped grounds, woodlands, ponds and lakes. The mansion is furnished with fine English antiques and decorative arts from the more than fifty years of the family’s residence. Old Westbury Gardens welcomes visitors of all ages for guided tours of the mansion and it’s botanic gardens. Old Westbury Gardens will open on Saturday April 10th, Sunday April 11th, Saturday April 17th, and Sunday April 18th. The Gardens will formally open for the 2010 season on Saturday, April 24th.
Westbury House and Gardens are open every weekend from April 10th, and every day except Tuesday, from April 24th to October 31st from 10:00 am, until 5:00 pm (the House will open at 11:00 am), with the last vehicle allowed onto the property at 4:00 pm. It is free to tour for members, and children under 6 years of age. It costs only five dollars for children seven to twelve years of age, eight dollars if you are over 62 years of age, and 10 dollars for general admission. It is conveniently located only an hour away from East Northport.
Queens Botanical Gardens is also an hour away from East Northport. It is a living museum, a collection of gardens for the study, culture, exhibition, and display of plants. With the exception of being closed Mondays year-round, except legal holidays, Queens Botanical Garden is open April through October, Tuesday through Friday, 8:00AM to 6:00PM, Saturday and Sunday 8:00AM to 6:00PM. They are also open November through March, Tuesday through Sunday, 8:00AM to 4:30PM. Admission is free but donations are welcome.
Brooklyn Botanic Garden(www.bbg.org/) is also located in the city, only in a different borough. Along with the many varieties of plants and flowers, Brooklyn Botanic Garden also offers a cafe, garden shop, and gift shop. Hours of operation are now through March 13, 2010, Tuesday through Friday 8:00AM to 4:30PM, Saturday and Sunday 10:00AM to 4:30PM, and they are closed Mondays. Their hours March 14th through November 5, 2010 are Tuesday through Friday 8:00AM to 6:00PM, Saturday and Sunday 10:00AM to 6:00PM, and they are closed Mondays but open Memorial Day and Columbus Day, 10:00AM to 6:00PM, and they are closed Labor Day. Children under 12, school groups, seniors,Fridays year-round, members, Tuesdays, Saturdays 10AM to 12 noon, and weekdays November 17th through March 2nd are all free! Adults cost 8 dollars, seniors 65 years of age and older are four dollars, and students twelve years of age and older with valid IDs cost four dollars also.
