My top 3 movies based on a comic book are: Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, and Iron Man. Each of these films has a compelling story and well chosen cast who illuminate the characters better than a page in a comic book can.
Iron Man was released in 2008. This movie tells the story of Tony stark, a playboy and engineering genius who decides to use his technology to fight evil, as opposed to producing weapons for enemies. This decision comes after a harrowing ordeal in Afghanistan where he must create a suit of metallic armor in order to survive and escape his captors. When he returns to the United States, he updates his new suit to be the cutting edge of technology and decides to protect the world from Obadiah Stane who seeks to use technology to harm others.
Director: Jon Favreau
Main characters include: Robert Downey Jr., Terrence Howard, Jeff Bridges, Gwyneth Paltrow, and others.
Reasoning: This is a good adaptation because of the depth of the story. The story was modernized with new technology that is featured in the film as well as the special effects. As well as the Afghanistan angle which makes the movie relevant to current events. The movie features quite a bit of sarcastic humor between all of the action making it a well-rounded film.
Batman Begins was released in 2005. This film tells the tale of young Bruce Wayne who develops a terrible fear of bats after falling into a bat cave. This fear of bats causes him to beg his parents to leave a theater when a scene with bats is presented. Outside of the same theater, both of his parents are killed, and he internalizes the guilt and blames himself for their deaths. After the death of his parents, he moves to Asia and learns how to fight evil. He then returns to Gotham City in an effort to make the city a better place for citizens to live. This movie is an adaptation of the “Batman: Year One” style comics.
Director: Christopher Nolan
Main Characters: Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Liam Neeson, Katie Holmes, and Gary Oldman.
Reasoning: This film made the list because of its ability to invoke compassion. The film was well rounded and had enough action mixed with an interesting story which made it entertaining for all. After the release of The Dark Knight, this film was also helpful in establishing a history for future films.
The Dark Knight was also released in 2008. This film continues where the storyline in Batman Begins left off. Bruce Wayne pairs with District Attorney, Harvey Dent in an attempt to clear the streets of crime in Gotham City. In the beginning, this pair seems to have great effects on the crime rate of the city, but then the criminal genius, The Joker, is introduced. The Joker leads the characters on an in depth psychological game that tests each character. The plot is also enhanced with the love triangle which forms between Bruce Wayne, Harvey Dent, and Rachel Dawes.
Director: Christopher Nolan
Main Characters: Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, Aaron Eckhart, Michael Caine, Maggie, Gyllenhaal, Gary Oldman, and Morgan Freeman.
Reasoning: This film made the list because of the compelling emotional story and the superior acting. One of the best aspects of the film is the psychological drama which pulls the viewer in the experience the same emotions as the characters from a vicarious standpoint.
