10. The Fray – Never Say Never
A huge step in The Fray’s musical career, Never Say Never is the song that showed everyone that The Fray was going to stay in the music scene as a top group. It was nominated for a 2010 Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance by a Group with Vocals in 2009.
9. Green Day – 21 Guns
Much like many other songs that Green Day has written, 21 Guns contains a lot of emotion. It was chosen for the Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen soundtrack in 2009. It has been nominated for Best Pop Performance by a Group with Vocals and Best Rock Song for the 2010 Grammy Awards.
8. Paramore – Ignorance
Ignorance is from Paramore’s new album Brand New Eyes. Although it has peaked lower than expected in US charts, it is Paramore’s highest rated single in the UK. The musical composition and the lyric writing are the reasons why Ignorance made my top 10.
7. Linkin Park – New Divide
Structured similarly to other of their other songs, Linkin Park’s New Divide was specifically made for the new Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen movie. The song is an introspective, high energy song that debuted on the Billboard Top 100 in May at number 6.
6. Coldplay – Life in Technicolor ii
Intended to be on their 2008 album, Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends, Coldplay decided to release this song on their EP. A great musical composition and masterful lyrics, Life in Technicolor ii was nominated for Best Rock Performance by a Group with Vocals.
5. The Killers – Human
The Killers remained silent for a year and a half prior to the release of their new album Day & Age, Human is a fast-paced pop song written by frontman Brandon Flowers. With poetic lyrics, the song was a huge hit in Europe and abroad, and that is why Human takes the number 5 spot.
4. Muse – Uprising
Peaking at number 1 on the Billboard Alternative Rock chart, Muse’s Uprising features Matt Bellamy’s lower voice register and darker lyrical writing skills. Uprising is composed of a series of synthesizers making a very strong song containing anthemic qualities when coupled with its unifying lyricism. Uprising was able to achieve chart success in the US without any pop station plays.
3. The All-American Rejects – Gives You Hell
Gives You Hell peaked at number 4 on the Billboard charts and was the number 1 most played song on the radio in 2009. Gives You Hell was a success internationally and became the All-American Rejects best selling single worldwide.
2. Three Days Grace – The Good Life
Three Days Grace’s new song The Good Life the lyrics are basically about wanting to have “the good life” and “a good time”. Most people at the end of the day just want to have a good life and live in peace.
1. Kings of Leon – Use Somebody
My number one alternative rock song is Use Somebody by the band Kings of Leon. This is my number one because it has so many features of a great song, a catchy chorus, quality music composition, and a moral song meaning. On December 2, 2009, Use Somebody was nominated for the 52nd Grammy Awards for Song of the Year, Record of the Year, Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal and Best Rock Song.
