After being a resident in Colorado for a few years, you end up finding local restaurants that taste amazing. One of these local favorites is the Beau Jo’s in Idaho Springs. Everyone stops by this local joint to get their famous pizza and atmosphere. This is why people in Boulder were excited to see that they too were going to have their very own Beau Jo’s restaurant in town.
At first glance the Beau Jo’s in Boulder is nothing special. It is on the corner of Baseline and 27th way next to a liquor store. The parking lot is tiny and it is hard to maneuver a large vehicle in this space.
If you’ve been to the Beau Jo’s in Idaho Springs you can remember the warm homely feeling that it offer right when you walk in the door. A rush of pizza smells and the bustle of the staff is like an old diner. The Boulder restaurant is different. Once you walk in the door there is a distinct feel that this is a corporate establishment. The staff is a bunch of college kids that could care less if you want to booth or table, and spend most of the time flirting with the girls at the host podium.
After my wife and I were seated by the 16 year old that was trying to hide his piercings with tape we sat down to look at the menu. Everything was exactly the same as the other restaurants. They even had the same salad bar. The server took our drink orders which came in the mason jars, this was a warming sight to see the tradition was carried over to this location. He was very friendly and professional when it came to taking an order instead of flirting with hostess.
We ordered two salad bars and a medium pepperoni and pineapple pizza with their thick crust. The salad bar was excellent, they have a staff member that makes sure that the green beans don’t mix with the lettuce and the lettuce doesn’t mix with the carrots etc. It was very fresh and crisp. The salad bar was cooled with ice to make sure everything stayed cold in the heated room.
The pizza came out after we had finished our salads and tasted excellent. It was exactly how it tasted up in their Idaho Springs location. After eating the pizza with dripping melted cheese, fresh peperoni, dessert is covering the crust in honey and eating it like corn bread.
Beau Jo’s in Boulder is not unique for its atmosphere and feels like any other restaurant, but the food is special. If you don’t have time to drive to the mountains, or never find yourself up there be sure to stop by this restaurant to get quality pizza. The staff is professional when they need to be, and the wood fired pizza is unique to Colorado.
