Have you ever priced decorative soaps? Whoa – they are expensive! Of course, you can often find decorative soaps at dollar-theme stores but these soaps are generally very small and not so aromatic. If you want real soaps, large ones with designs that impress, just take some time to make your own. You don’t have to know anything about soap making because you won’t be making the actual soaps. Instead, you’ll take regular soaps and make them into magnificent decorative types that will enhance your bathroom or serve well as a gift to someone. You don’t have to have much time or money to create the terrific soaps that can be made with your choice of literally thousands of patterns.
Make one soap arrangement by simply using a washcloth. Fold the top and bottom of the cloth towards the center, then fold in half. Set the chosen soap in the middle and bring the ends up over the top of the soap. Use a colored chenille-type pipe cleaner to secure the washcloth. Twist the pipe cleaner around the cloth to hold it around the soap. Now attach a silk flower, a satin bow or other embellishment to the pipe cleaner. This cute gift or bathroom accent is very simple to make but looks great on a shelf in the guest bathroom – or your own bathroom.
Fabric paints, available in squirt tubes, work well to create a huge assortment of soap designs. Use stencils and the paints or just paint freehand directly on the soap. Write “USA” in red, white and blue to quickly make patriotic designs. Or, use the paints to make a monogram. The paints are available in a large assortment of colors and types, like pearl-look, metallic or neon. Use this technique to make holiday soaps, everyday designs or personalized soaps for friends. Make stripes, polka-dots, geometric designs and more. To use the soap simply pull the paint off of it. The paints easily peel away to allow you to actually wash with the soaps.
Decoupage adhesive makes it easy for you to make so many different types of soaps. The glue is found at craft stores and is made especially for attaching paper to other objects. Use the glue to make soaps for holidays or as gifts. Create one design by coating the soap with the glue then sprinkling on confetti pieces. The small pieces of paper are sold by the pack at any craft store. Coat the front of the soap, sprinkle on the confetti, then allow to dry. Do each side, then do around the perimeter of the soap. For best results coat the finished soap with the glue one or more times. Each time you coat the soap with the adhesive you guarantee that the pattern will last even longer. So, when using the soap there is no need to peel away the confetti first. Simply shower with the soap and the confetti will dissipate over time.
Use the decoupage to make any number of designs, patterns, colors and themes. A short list of the things you can use to decorate the soaps include comic strips, foil, Christmas cards, paper photos, stickers, wrapping paper, cutup gift bags, or images printed from your computer. Cut out the image you want, spread the decoupage on the soap, then position the picture. After the glue dries spread another layer and another, over the top of the image. The glue will ensure that the picture will last a long time even when the soap is being used. It, too, will dissipate over time upon usage.
Create really elegant soaps by spending some extra time crafting. Cover the soap in glue then cover it with sequin. Roll a piece of tape up and use it to hold the sequin while you place them. Use this same method to cover soaps in fake jewels or similar items. These soaps are not intended for use, but the ornaments can be scraped off, and the soaps can then be used, if you want. These bejeweled soaps look great when placed in a basket near the tub or sink. Nestle them on a colored washcloth or even a piece of lace.
It’s fun to make beautiful soaps especially when you don’t have to boil, melt and pour the actual soaps. With the above techniques you can create glitzy soaps to impress or fun soaps for young kids. You can make endless gifts for your friends or just decorate your own bathroom for holidays. All the soaps are cheap and easy to make so go ahead and get busy – there’s bound to be a special occasion fast approaching!
