Haiti was hit again by a 6.1 Haiti aftershock 35 miles WSW of Port-au-Prince and poorly constrained at 6.2 miles in depth, but strong enough to be felt by Haiti’s 7.0 earthquake victims and those offering Haiti relief.
At 6:03 a.m. another earthquake hit Haiti temporarily making Haiti relief efforts more difficult as survivors began running in the streets in panic on shifty stability. The already damaged buildings in Port-au-Prince hang on by a thread, just one strong aftershock from tumbling completely.
Earthquake predictions could not have seen this upcoming Haiti earthquake on January 20. The USGS has been tagging earthquakes around the globe. Yesterday the Cayman Islands region just 45 miles from George Town reaching 5.8 in magnitude. California has experienced some mild shakers without notice during the last couple of weeks.
Most earthquake aftershocks of strong magnitude usually reach within 24 hours of a major earthquake. Back to back the aftershocks followed the 7.0 but did not reach 6.1, this is the first on the eight day after.
Since Haiti’s 7.0 January 12, 2010 earthquake up to 200,000 are said to have died. The numbers will never be set, it remains as an approximate due to the dead being dumped in piles of opened holes without a proper body count. This causes many loved ones continued stress as many wonder just how can the dead rest in peace. Plus, most would like to have a proper burial and it is very difficult to form closure in a body’s absence.
Today’s 6.1 shook up those in Haiti, including Haitians and relief teams. Time is of the essence as within the last week many were carted away from Haiti. From orphans, the sick to out of country citizens returning back to their land, some have been saved from what could be upcoming. A very good thing since this morning may have simply created more hell on earth for them.
Those who are in Haiti right now can only hope that another Haiti aftershock does not reach matched digits as the catastrophic January 12th earthquake, or close to.
It would devastate and already devastated Haiti.
As many searches are beginning to be called off in Haiti for the trapped, Haiti can now begin to heal. Or at least until the next strong aftershock.
