The Christian band Newsong has been bringing big name bands, and Christian singers, to the public for the last 14 years, the Winter Jam concert is only $10 at the door. My son and I have attended the concert for the last 6 years, and we have enjoyed every single one; each year is better than the last, we have never been disappointed. Newsong has taken on this genre as their ministry in order to bring the Gospel to more, and more people as Jesus instructed His disciples to do, before He ascended to the Father on Mount Olivet. “And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.” (Mark 16:15, NKJV)
Like the Pied Piper of Hamlin in Robert Browning’s children’s book, Newsong’s Winter Jam concert draws larger, larger crowds each year. The first 4 concerts we attended in Norfolk, Virginia were performed in the Ted Constant Convocation Center across from Old Dominion University, but the crowd became so large that they had to turn people away at the door; so they moved the concert to the Norfolk Scope Arena. The move to the larger arena seemed to help for the first year, but in 2009 they had to open the seats behind the stage to avoid having to turn to many people away, of course the drawback to this was that those behind the stage could listen, but they were unable to see the artists.
The lineup for the concert consists of: two or three big name Christian bands, a few new Christian bands, or singers, a guest speaker who gives a motivational Christian speech, and an altar call. It is an amazing evening for all, and many people have accepted Jesus Christ as their Savior over the years, according to Hearitfirst.com Winter Jam site after only 9 tour dates this year; 89,606 people have attended, 2,138 orphaned children have been sponsored, and 11.130 individuals have made decisions to accept Jesus Christ as their Savior. These numbers are amazing, and they will continue to grow with each concert, there are 35 dates left, Newsong is truly fulfilling their responsibility to their Savior, and their God.
Anyone who decides to attend will not be disappointed as the music is wonderful, the spirit of love, and the Holy Ghost fills the concert hall, motivating all attendees to stand, clap, and sing along with each spirit filled song. The guest speaker Tony Nolan always gives a wonderful semi-sermon that has a good message, and is usually humorous as well. They have autograph signing opportunities, a reception for Youth leaders, and Youth Pastors giving them the opportunity to meet the stars, have prayer, and give them youth leadership suggestions. They also have tables of souvenirs set up for those who wish to purchase items to remember the evening.
