America has dropped the ball. At least, that is what some Idol fans are saying after Thursday night’s shocking elimination results. The message boards and bloggers are buzzing: America got it wrong.
On one of the more emotional shows of American Idol, four contestants were given the boot-Todrick Hall, Katelyn Epperly, Alex Lambert and Lilly Scott. Yes, you read that right. Alex and Lilly, two of the top contenders of Season 9 were yanked out of the competition. And it was very sad to see Alex go as he was quickly becoming a fan favorite. “There’s a lot of things America hasn’t seen me do yet,” he said. “And a lot of things I know I’m capable of. … I wish I could have just broken out of my shell.” When given the bad news, a visually upset Lilly responded with, “I put my heart into every performance. I really gave it my all every time. … I don’t know what America wants to hear.”
Nonetheless, it goes without saying that America voted for whom they wanted to hear. The elite Top 12 are Katie Stevens, Siobhan Magnus, Lacey Brown, Didi Benami, Paige Miles, Crystal Bowerson, Andrew Garcia, Aaron Kelly, Michael Lynche, Lee Dewyze, Casey James and Tim Urban (no joke).
Although the results were shocking, they were not a surprise. For the past few seasons, Idol has been more of a popularity contest, rather than a singing competition. There is no doubt that the speed-texting teens phoned home like crazy to keep around the youngsters-Katie, Aaron and Tim. Lilly is much more talented than Katie and obviously, teens don’t quite understand her unique, quirky, and Indies style. As for Alex (had he won the battle with stage fright), he could outperform both Aaron and Tim any day. This is especially true for Tim, who only had one good week. Evidently, those pictures of his abs that have been circulating the Internet has done its’ job.
So what went wrong? Did Crystal and Didi’s votes split those of Lilly? Did Alex’s “mullet” turn off the teen girl viewers? How did Paige manage to slither her way into the Top 12? She hasn’t had a good week yet. Some viewers speculate that the popular website, Vote for the Worst, was instrumental in keeping both Paige and Tim on the show. Check out their site. They are rejoicing in their victory win.
Whatever the reason may be, there are fewer talented people left this season. We are left with the over saturation of ballad singing, stool-sitting, guitar strumming wannabes. The top contestants are not at all what Hollywood Week spun them out to be. And as much as I like “Big Mike” and Andrew, they may only go so far before voters let them go. Crystal is the only one to watch.
Next week, the group performs to the Rolling Stones. It is going to be a long season.
