Chris Daughtry, David Cook, Kris Allen. These are the names that pop into my head when I think of originality and talent on American Idol. Yes Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood are among many others that are extremely talented as well, but in recent seasons the bar has been raised and set. In my opinion this season’s contestants don’t even have the bar in sight.
Do they not realize where they are? Do they not realize the resources they have at their disposal? Why are they not taking advantage of this? Was I the only one watching Chris Daughtry take the stage like a vicious animal and demand that he be heard? Was everyone else taking a bathroom break when Kris Allen proved to be an artist and surprise audiences week after week? Apparently so.
This is season on American Idol definitely has it’s contenders. Crystal Bowersox should just take her award now and start recording her album. At the same time though, she is predictable and plays it safe week after week. Michael Lynche is a true performer and Lee Dewyze is finally coming out of his shell. Meanwhile Siobhan Magnus needs to stop screaming because she thinks that’s what people want to hear. Lee Dewyze, Michael Lynche and Siobhan Magnus are close 2nds behind Crystal Bowersox with phenomenal voices and talent. I just seem to be waiting tirelessly for my “Kris Allen Moment.”
I want to tune in every week expecting to be amazed, surprised and feel like I’m getting a sneak peek into a rising new star’s first album. I just don’t have those feelings towards this season. Andrew Garcia, Didi Benami and Tim Urban I predict will be the next three to go. Even though I finally saw star power in Katie Stevens last night with her soul R&B song, and the judges didn’t seem to enjoy it, she will go quickly as well. Her cute 16-year-old sweetness may be winning her votes, but it won’t last long. Tim Urban I always seem to fast forward through after 10 words leave his mouth, and poor Didi as much as I realize what potential she has I feel she makes the most horrific songs choices. We can’t forget about Casey James and Aaron Kelly. Both good, both to predictable and play it safe each week.
I hope that soon these latest players start realizing that they are in a competition, stop listening to the judges, be comfortable on stage and start performing. Not like I’m going to stop watching American Idol, it’s just I want these kids to make it and this is their opportunity. Stop playing it safe, make wise decisions and put your personality into every song, every performance. I need my “wow” moments, ASAP.
