American Idol Review- April 20, 2010
Tonight the 7 finalists performed songs of inspiration with guidance from Alicia Keys
Here is a recap of the performances:
Casey James – “Don’t stop” (Fleetwood Mac)
Great performance; very solid opening to the show. I am not a big fan of this song but I like Casey’s version.
Judges reaction: Randy thought it was good but that he sounds the same week to week. Ellen said he is consistently good but not great. Kara says he needs to show us what makes him different. Simon said it was not inspirational and no originality.
Lee DeWyze- “The Boxer” (Simon and Garfunkel)
Nice version of this classic. He made it sound modern. I’m not sure it was his best performance but still very good.
Judges Reaction – Randy said he is a great artist ready to make great music. Ellen said it was a beautiful song choice and that he gets better and better. Kara thought he had his “moment” tonight and was connected to the song. Simon said it was the best of the night. The performance was sincere, emotional and inspirational.
Tim Urban – “Better Days” (Goo Goo Dolls)
I didn’t think it was a good performance. It sounded pitchy at times and very karaoke
Judges Reaction: Randy said it was OK, good karaoke. Ellen said he is like the soup of the day and today she did not like the soup. Kara said it wasn’t the best execution. Simon said he had improved over the weeks but a little bit of a letdown tonight.
Aaron Kelly – “I believe I can fly” (R Kelly)
A very good performance and a great finish. But I still like last week’s better.
Judges Reaction: Randy said he had pure vocal talent and did a good job. Ellen said he had a big voice and he handled it well. Kara said by the end it was like he was flying. Simon said he liked Aaron but if he had heard it on the radio he would have turned it off.
Siobhan Magnus – “When you believe” (Mariah Carey)
What happened to the aggressive, risk taker Siobhan? This was a train wreck.
Judges Reaction: Randy said it was the toughest song choice of the night and it was just OK. Ellen said it was confirmation of why she’s here. Kara said this wasn’t a musical and still didn’t know who she was. Simon said the arrangement was too old fashioned and that the performance was all over the place.
Michael Lynche – “Hero” (Nickelback)
I didn’t feel like he was connected to the song. It was just an average karaoke version.
Judges Reaction: Randy thought he held his own. Ellen said it was great. Kara said it was not good and all over the place. Simon said it was good but felt artificial (I agree).
Crystal Bowersox – “People get ready” (The Impressions)
Another stellar performance. She was very emotional at the end. Crystal will be a star whether she wins this competition or not. This was the only performance of the night that I found really inspirational.
Judges Reaction: Randy said it was unbelievable. Ellen said it was so beautiful and that she grows each week. Kara thanked her for taking a risk and that she had schooled all the others. Simon said THAT was inspirational and a class above everything else he had heard tonight.
There is no doubt that Crystal was the best tonight. It’s a toss up on who will go home. My prediction is either Casey or Siobhan.
