Who got voted off the top 10 on American Idol this week?
Ryan Seacrest came out on stage and the crowd went wild. This week Ryan reminded us about the save option that the judges have. Ryan introduced the judges Randy Jackson, Ellen DeGeneres, Kara DioGuardi, and Simon Cowell.
Ruben Studdard performed on Idol
Former idol contestant winner from Season 2, Ruben Studdard sang his new single, ‘Don’t Make ‘Em Like You No More”. I was happy to see Ruben back on the American Idol stage. He did a great job working the crowd and making eye contact as he was performing. He got the crowd clapping and swaying to his ballad. Ruben also looked great, he’s lost a lot of weight and when asked by Ryan what he’s been up to, he said, “I’m now a Vegan and I’ve been working out every day.” Ruben told us he is going on tour in September.
Next on the show was a clip from the cast from The Clash of the Titans movie. They were there to give the American Idols support (and provide a little cross-marketing opportunity).
Does anyone else sense a growing hostility between Ryan and Simon? At first I thought they were playing around but now I’m not so sure. They seem to be throwing around a bit of testosterone this season.
The votes – who stayed?
As far as the contestants went tonight, Lee Dewyze was called first – he was safe. Then Casey James and Aaron Kelly were told they were safe.
Ryan asked Simon, “How Aaron could sing about love if he had never been in love before at 16 years-old? Simon got smart and Kara said, ‘All Simon loved was himself.’ Randy Jackson saved the day when he piped in and told Aaron that love was ‘like loving all the things, you know the stuff you love’, only with a twist!’ That made Ellen smile.
Katie Stevens and Siobhan Magnus were asked to stand. Katie was told she was in the bottom three and as the camera panned Siobhan we saw her break out in tears because she found out even after her rough performance the night before – she was safe.
Ryan approached Simon on the judges’ bench and asked him for some advice about Katie. Simon said, “I wish Katie had chosen something more like ‘Wild horses’ and I’m frustrated you are not taking my advice. You’ve been in the bottom three times now”. Are they playing with her? Later she was told she was safe.
Up and coming Justin Bieber was sitting in the audience
Justin Bieber was in the audience and credited Usher with shaping him as an artist. Justin’s doing all right with the number one album in the country this week.
This week’s mentor, Usher, performs for the idols and American Idol Fans
Usher came on stage and did OMG. His performance was full of dancing, lights and sound effects. Usher had some nice dance moves but there must have been something wrong with the sound because it wasn’t as good as I expected it would be. But Usher can dance and reminded me of Michael Jackson or Prince with his stage show and dancers.
Didi Benami was also in the bottom three. Big Mike Flynne flipped Ryan in the air over his shoulder after Ryan teased him and made him come out on the stage only to tell him that he was staying.
Ryan remarked that Tim is always smiling and Kara asked Tim why he was smiling? Tim Urban replied to her and the crowd and said, “The reason I’m smiling is because I always know that this could be the last time that I perform here. Knowing that I’m in front of millions of people is a great experience. It is a moment I will think about for the rest of my life.” Right answer Tim. The crowd returned his smile and he stayed.
Don’t forget to go to Itunes.com for all the American Idol songs
Sean Combs was in the house
Ryan paid homage to the busy (puff daddy) when he introduced him as a “Singer, actor, producer and entrepreneur. He performed Hello Good Morning, a Ditty Dirty Money. I was impressed with P.Diddy, he sang well, he had dancers and his stage show included a strobelight show. P.Diddy had a lot of energy and at the end of his performance; he also exhibited charisma when he walked out on the stage behind the judges and put his arms up to the audience. Then he walked around and greeted each of the judges with a hug or a high five.
P.Diddy said “My hat is off to these young stars and I want to thank the American Idol crew for the opportunity to be here.”
Bye Bye Birdie, Didi has to leave the coop
Unfortunately, the sensitive Didi Benami was voted off tonight. She chose “Rhianna” by Fleetwood Mac rather than the song she sang last night which I think was a wonderful decision. She sounded much better than last night, and instead of playing her “Journey on Idol” before she performed, the producers chose to show her story after she sang which I thought was wise. Didi managed to hold it together very gracefully, and at the end, the contestants surrounded her and hugged her as the show faded. She made the Top 10, she will be on tour, and we may just see her around again.
How did I do with my picks? I actually had Didi on the bottom last night, but I put her at 9 and Tim Urban at 10 because it was bothering me that he didn’t seem to be pushing himself to go beyond his comfort zone. I actually think he’s got some talent but he just seems to be fooling around. How did you do with your votes this week?
