Alicia Keys was named Billboard’s Top Artist of the Decade. And that is why they chose her to be this week mentor for Idol Gives Back. Tomorrow night Idol Gives Back will air.
Casey James sang Don’t Stop by Fleetwood Mac. Keys called it one of the biggest songs ever, and she told him to be sure and give a lot of personality. His voice sounded great tonight and as always, he brought the energy from behind a guitar. Randy Jackson called it a good performance, but told him to step outside of the box. Ellen called him consistentrly good, but not great. Simon said he was surprised he picked that song, with it being inspirational week. Cowell called it a lazy song choice. (B)
Lee Dewyze sang The Boxer by Simon and Garfunkel. He said the song inspired him to learn to play guitar at an early age. Dewyze had a big connection with the audience through the song. His voice never sounded better. I see Dewyze growing more as a singer and musician, every time he gets on the stage. Randy Jackson said Lee is going to have a big career. Ellen liked the soul and depth and sais he is advancing. Kara said tonight was his moment. Simon said so far his song was the best of the night. He called his performance emotional, inspirational, and brilliant. (A)
Tim Urban sang Better Days by The Goo Goo Dolls. Alicia Keys said it fit his voice really well. His performance was okay, not very exciting. Randy said the performance was okay and karaoke. I agree. Ellen compared him to soup, some days she likes it and today she did not. Simon said he had improved over the weekss, but tonight was a let-down. (C)
Aaron Kelly sang I Believe I Can Fly by Seal and R Kelly. I thought it was a good song to display his voice through. His voice is powerful and I love it! He has the best voice of all the Idols, in my opinion. Randy said he has pure vocal talent and he did a great job with a big song. Ellen loved his performance. Simon said that Aaron gave it his all. He called it a good performance, but said if he had heard it on the radio, that he would have turned it. (A+)
Siobhan Magnus sang When You Believe by Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey. Alicia Keys said it was no easy song to perform and said she was impressed with her voice. Siobhan has her own sound and she knows how to change a song up – to make it different. Sometimes she just takes it too far. Her voice is beautiful when she hits the high notes. Randy said she picked the hardest song to sing of the night. He called her performance okay. Ellen disagreed calling it confirmation of why Siobhan was here. Kara said technically it was great, but said she had problems with the musical arrangement. Simon agreed with Randy, and said it was a bit all over the place. (C)
Michael Lynche sang Hero by Nickelback. He chose a good song and started strong, but then the arrangement got repeditive, for me. Randy Jackson said Michael held his own. Ellen liked the performance, and Kara said it was not his favorite performance. Simon said he sang it pretty well, but it felt a bit artificial. Simon said he thinks Michael will still be around next week. (C)
Crystal Bowersox sang People Get Ready, without her guitar, for the first time on the show. Her voice was stronger than ever. Even without the guitar, she rocked the stage. She has talent, and it is obvious to everyone around her. At the end she started crying and did not completely get the last notes out. Randy said that is how it’s done. Ellen said Crystal had never looked more beautiful. Kara thanked her for taking a risk and putting down the guitar. Kara said she just schooled everyone. Simon said he was happy to see her emotional and feeling the song. Simon said her performance was in a different class than the other performances tonight. (A+)
