Domino’s Pizza recently announced that they would be giving a face lift to their main pizza recipe. As of December 27, 2009, Domino’s is now serving pizza with a new crust, sauce, and cheese.
Recently, my in-laws invited me and my family over to their home for pizza night. They decided to order the new Domino’s Pizza so we could all try out the new recipe for ourselves. We ordered a cheese pizza and three other pizzas with a variety of toppings.
As far as the toppings go, they were your standard meat and veggie toppings that Domino’s has always served on their pizzas. Everything tasted fine, and I have no complaints.
The new cheese is claimed to be made with 100% real shredded mozzarella (rather than diced), and it is also flavored with just a touch of provolone. The cheese tasted fine, but I did not notice anything different in the flavor. It just tasted like regular mozzarella cheese to me. What I don’t like about Domino’s cheese is that it does not have that gooey, stringy, melted texture that I like on a pizza. It has always been like that, and it seems as though they did nothing to improve the quality.
The new sauce promises to be a little bolder, a little sweeter, and have a combination of herbs with the kick of red pepper. There was barely any sauce on any of the pizzas we ordered so I honestly could not tell whether or not the flavor was any better than before. I like a generous layer of sauce on my pizza, and this did not even come close to hitting the mark for me. If they weren’t so skimpy, maybe I could have given a better opinion on the sauce.
The new crust is supposed to be a more buttery, garlic seasoned crust. It had a very light brushing of butter with a sprinkle of garlic on the outer edges of the crust. It tasted a little bit like a garlic breadstick. It was more flavorful than their standard crust, but it is not as though a garlic crust is a new concept. I think it would be better if the garlic and some herbs were baked right into the crust rather than sprinkled around the edges. Also, if they offered a side of marinara dipping sauce to go along with the pizza, it certainly would have made the pizza more flavorful and would have been even more fun to eat, especially for the kids.
For me, the new Domino’s Pizza is mediocre at best. It is good enough for satisfying a pizza fix if you want something quick, cheap, and easy. I probably wouldn’t refuse to eat this pizza if it was offered to me again, but I do not think I will be ordering from Domino’s Pizza any time in the near future. If you decide to try it for yourself, Domino’s does have a money back guarantee if you are not fully satisfied with your pizza.
