Massachusetts Voters – President Obama Will Be Calling You
I thought I have heard everything possible over the telephone. Salesmen selling, charities needing, bill collectors demanding, pollsters wanting answers and people calling telling me who I should vote for.
They are all aggravating especially the last one I mentioned, people telling me who I should vote for. It is an invasion of my privacy and it particularly ticks me off when it is done in a recording. They cannot hear me tell them how inappropriate I think it is to call me at dinner time and tell me why I need to vote for – who ever!
Five minutes ago I got one of those phone calls. It was in a voice I recognized, but could not place immediately. Once the person identified themselves, I was stunned. It was none other than – President Barack Obama. A recorded message from the President of the United States telling me it was vital for his health care bill that I vote for Martha Coakley.
First of all it was a bit strange because his first word was not “hello”, it was -“hi”, and then a pause like I should say “hi” back. I did say hi back, not realizing it was a recording at first. (I am sure you are thinking this woman does not have both oars in the water if she is conversing with a recording) But, it sounded just like it was a buddy of mine calling – live. I think it was a deliberate pause to get people to do that and loosen them up, but that is beside the point, which is – Why is the President of the United States making pre-recorded phone calls for votes for Martha Coakley when the world is falling apart at the seams?
Maybe the time would have better been spent making pre-recorded phone calls to ask for help for the people who are clinging to their life in Haiti?
President Obama’s phone call just did not sit right with me. It is just another incident on a long list where his priorities have been in the wrong place at the wrong time. This time it is personal, HE CALLED ME! (Ok, I know I am one of the hundreds of thousands that will hear that pre-recorded message and it was anything but personal, but when you call me at home it is PERSONAL.) I shut his speeches off and flip through the channels when he is giving us an update on how good things are going, because I don’t think things are so good right now. Now he is invading my phone line!
If you live in Massachusetts, you will be getting one of these phone calls too. Don’t fall for the “hi” and then say it back in the time allotted with the pause. (You will feel as foolish as I did).
*A thought on poor Martha Coakley: You would think that a phone call asking you to vote for her might start out with her accomplishments or possibly her experience. I do not think I would want to be addressed as a vessel for health care reform if I were running for office. How about the woman herself? Could you think of any good reasons to vote for her?
Well to be fair, I did hang up after the first three or four sentences, but maybe I wouldn’t have if I heard a little cheer for the lady looking for the Senate seat. Oh, who am I kidding, I would of hung up anyway. The way things are going in this country if President Obama is trying to sell us something else over the phone – I am just not buying!
*I did feel just a twinge of power hanging up on the President of the United States! ( I know, something to bring up in therapy).
