A Guide to Military Spouse and Dependent Education Assistance

by tinyswot

Military spouses and dependents of US Air Force personnel have a wide range of education opportunities available to them to help them pursue or complete their education. What is right for you? How do you pursue these education opportunities?

Air Force Aid Society (AFAS)

The Air Force Aid Society (AFAS) has helped many military dependents to complete their higher education. The General Henry H. Arnold Education Grant Programme offers grants to dependent spouses and children of active duty, retiree, and retired reserve and deceased Air Force members the opportunity to further their education. The grant amount is currently $2,000, paid to each qualifying applicant.

The General H. Arnold Education Grant is very competitive in its selection process. It takes the income and financial circumstances of families into account. Grants are made each June for the upcoming academic year. Qualifying students must only use funds to pay for their tuition, books, and fees, or other education-related expenses, not for personal gain. The official General Henry H. Arnold Education Grant Programme website provides more details on how to apply for this education benefit.

General George S. Brown Spouse Tuition Assistance Programme (STAP)

The General George Brown Spouse Tuition Assistance Programme (STAP) is available for military spouses of active duty personnel who accompany their spouses to overseas military installations, and who intend to register for college or university while they are living abroad. STAP is meant to equip military spouses for increased employment opportunities following graduation.

According to Military.com, STAP offers military spouses with tuition assistance (TA) “at a rate of 50% of unmet tuition charge per course, with a maximum of $1,500 per academic year and a term maximum, which is calculated by dividing the annual maximum (1,500) by the number of terms within the academic year.” STAP considers an academic year as the 12-month period from 1 August through to 31 July of each year. To learn more about the General George S. Brown Spouse Tuition Assistance Programme, go to the official General George S. Brown Spouse Tuition Assistance Program (STAP) website for more information.

Military spouses and/or dependents of active duty or retired US Air Force personnel can further their education by taking advantage of AFAS and STAP. Go the official Web sites for more information.
