Years ago, my friend “Scott” worked in the Receiving Department of an office supply store. Sometimes he and his co-workers, in their haste, would accidentally slice through the box with a cutter. As a result, I was gifted with office supplies that couldn’t be sold because their bag or box was damaged. I ended up with oodles of rubber bands in all sizes, widths and colors. Rubber bands always came in handy. Over the years I’ve found some neat ways to use them. Read on to find out 5 fabulous ways rubber bands can make your life easier.
1. Use Rubber Bands to Mark Soon-To-Be-Outdated Milk Cartons
I always check the expiration dates on milk before I buy it. The farther out the date, the better. Still, time passes quickly. Before I knew it, I’d pour some milk and end up with a glass full of soured clumps. To solve this problem, I now place a yellow rubber band around the cap a couple days before the expiration date. The rubber bands alert us when the milk is about to expire.
2. Get a Firm Grasp on Wet Shampoo and Conditioner Bottles With Rubber Bands
Have you ever dropped a slippery shampoo or conditioner bottle while you’re in the shower? I have. It can hurt so badly that you think you’ve broken your toe. To make those bottles easier to grasp, place a wide rubber band around their middles. That way, you can grip the rubber bands, even if your hands are wet or sudsy.
3. Sort Through Catalogs, Papers and Money Quickly Without the Need to Lick Your Finger
It seems like human nature to lick your finger when you’re trying to turn the pages in a catalog or magazine, or sort through paperwork. If you think about the germ factor, it’s really gross. The next time you need to get a grasp on slippery papers, wrap a rubber band around your thumb first. Don’t make it too tight to cut off the circulation.
4. Get A Grip On Your Cell Phone While You Text or Play A Handheld Game With Rubber Bands
Watching my grandson trying to hold onto his Game Boy while he furiously played a game, and fumbling with my cell phone, made this use for rubber bands come to mind. Place a wide rubber band around the body of the game or phone. It makes it easier to hold onto instead of that slick plastic.
5. Use A Rubber Band to Erase Pencil Marks
No eraser? Not a problem as long as you have a rubber band. Simply wrap it around your finger or fold it over a couple times. Then, wipe it across the pencil marks and watch them disappear.
