Whether your mother has recently passed away or has been gone for awhile, you may want to continue to honor her and her memory from year to year. You have several good options that can bring you comfort on what may be a difficult day. Obviously, you do not want to get too carried away on Mothers Day, but a meaningful gesture can be done in good taste.
You can follow traditional ways to give honor to those who have passed away.
Anytime that a person wants to honor a deceased loved one, decorating the grave is considered appropriate. A nice spray of flowers placed on the grave or the headstone is a good choice. You may also choose to have a special centerpiece for your table on Mothers Day that everyone can enjoy over the noon meal. This option allows you to enjoy the beauty of the centerpiece and a gentle memory of your mom on Mothers Day and for a few more days after it is over.
Doing something with her favorite color can be another possibility.
You might try wearing a hat, scarf, or outfit that reflects the color that you most associate with your mother when you remember her. This will give you the opportunity to mention to family and friends why you chose to wear the particular item. Hopefully, this can generate some conversation recalling special moments from her life. Other similar options would be to wear a style of clothing that she preferred or even a different hairstyle.
If your mother had a Mothers Day tradition that she observed, you might want to adopt it as your own.
This could include fixing a specific Mothers Day menu for one of the meals that day. Perhaps she liked to go to special spot or do some other activity to honor her own mother or to enjoy time with her family. Anything along this line would be appropriate without seeming to be over the top. It might even be a nice Sunday afternoon drive through some area that she liked. This will give you a chance to reflect on how much your mother meant and still means to you.
Honor some person or cause that had a special meaning for your mother.
If some of your mother’s friends or siblings are still living, go and spend some time with one or more of them. While they cannot replace your mother, they will have many common memories with her that you may find pleasant to share. Explain to the person that you have come to give them honor in place of your mom. Most people will be touched by this gesture.. Giving money or volunteering time to some cause that your mother found important can be a way of extending her influence in the world and giving her honor on this special day.
