This Kentucky-Mississippi State SEC finals has the making of a great game, as they took their one regular season game into overtime before Kentucky was able to put them away late. Now Mississippi State wants to prove they belong in the 2010 NCAA Tournament, and take an SEC Championship Title along with them.
The 2010 SEC Championship Game takes place on Sunday, March 14th with live broadcast coverage on ABC starting at 1:00 p.m. EST (10:00 a.m. PST). Kentucky is trying their hardest to clinch one of the top seeds in the 2010 NCAA Tournament, and have probably already locked down a No. 1 seed with their strong 2009-2010 season. Kentucky now sits at 31-2 on the season, as well as the No. 2 ranking in both the AP Top 25 and the USA/Today Coaches Polls.
Mississippi State wasn’t even ranked nationally coming into the 2010 SEC Tournament, having posted a 23-10 overall record this season. Their showing at the SEC Tournament definitely proves that they deserved to be though.
Mississippi State brings a balanced scoring attack into the 2010 SEC Championship Game, led by double-double machine Jarvis Varnado down low. They will try hard on defense to stop the high-powers offense that Kentucky will present. Kentucky brings two phenoms to the table, led by point guard John Wall who could be the No. 1 pick in the 2010 NBA Draft, and power forward DeMarcus Cousins who has averaged a double-double during the current NCAA season.
This game will be a huge challenge for Mississippi State, but they did prove that they can hang around with Kentucky. The next step is to try and beat them on Sunday. As for Kentucky, they are trying to prove that they are the best team in college basketball this season, and are probably very tired of playing second fiddle to Kansas. That could propel them to a huge game and a spirited performance on Sunday afternoon as they try to convince the NCAA Selection Committee that they should get the No. 1 overall seed in the 2010 NCAA Tournament.
