When the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences short-listed the nominations for this year’s Best Director Oscar, they could not have chosen a more varied group of characters. The 2010 Oscar list of Best Directors nominated for Academy Awards is not only a gold mine of diverse talent but also a group of first-timers and potential firsts.
First-Timers At The 2010 Oscars:
Besides it being Kathryn Bigelow (“The Hurt Locker”) and Lee Daniels’ (“Precious”) first ever Best Director nominations, it is Jason Reitman’s (“Up In The Air”) second, making him the youngest director at 32 to have been nominated twice. The 2010 Oscars also have the honor of being the first Academy Award venue where exes are vying for Best Director, with James Cameron (“Avatar”) and Kathryn Bigelow having been married for a brief period some 20 years ago.
But the bigger stories might be the potential firsts if any of the nominees should win.
If James Cameron wins, he will be the first director to take the honors at the helm of a primarily computer-generated movie. Even “Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” (Peter Jackson directing) had humans acting throughout. He will also be the first director to take the Best Director Oscar after having set the box office record for top-grossing film (he did it with “Titanic” as well).
If Jason Reitman wins, it will be his first Oscar for Best Director. The same can be said of Quentin Tarantino (“Inglourious Basterds”), Kathryn Bigelow, and Lee Daniels.
If Lee Daniels wins, he will be the first ever African-American to win the Academy Award for Best Director. However, he won’t be the first to be nominated, that honor having gone to John Singleton in 1992 for “Boyz N The Hood.”
But Lee Daniels first has been overshadowed by another first. If Kathryn Bigelow wins the 2010 Best Director Oscar, she becomes the first woman to have ever done so. She is the fourth woman ever nominated, but in the 82 years the Academy has handed out Oscars, none have been handed to a female director.
The bottom line in this story of first-timers, firsts and potential firsts is, no matter who wins the 2010 Best Director Oscar, history will be made…
The 2010 82nd Academy Awards ceremony airs at 8 p.m. EST on March 7 on ABC Television.
