The NFL recently began this off season’s free agency period and it hasn’t taken very long to produce some interesting, and surprising moves. Long time Chargers star LaDainian Tomlinson, was released. LT did some shopping around before signing with the Jets. The big question for LT is, will he be better than recently released Thomas Jones? Jones finalized a deal with Kansas City last week. The Bengals are possibly making the most moves as of right now with re-signing or picking up unrestricted free agent players like Tank Johnson, Antonio Bryant, Chris Davis, and the aging safety Roy Williams.
Long time Carolina Panther quarterback Jake Delhomme was cut by the team, Jake then signed a deal to possibly be the starter in Cleveland. The Browns have been attempting to solve their troubles at the quarterback position this off season, they released Derek Anderson, and traded Brady Quinn to the Broncos. Cleveland then signed (QB) Seneca Wallace, and (TE) Benjamin Watson. In return for Brady Quinn the Browns received Peyton Hillis, and draft picks. Another former Carolina Panther, Julius Peppers signed what is so far, the biggest free agency deal of the year with “Da Bears.” The contract was reportedly worth 90 million dollars, with around 45 million of promised money.
In a seemingly desperate move to help the aging and injury prone running back, Clinton Portis, the Redskins inked a deal with Larry Johnson. This move looks promising, and should no doubt take some pressure off of Portis, and young QB Jason Campbell. Several teams are making news by not making deals, like Dallas, who have yet to pick up any big name free agents. Several free agents are still out there, which always leads to rumors and speculation, here are some of the most up to date rumors of possible deals:
T.O is looking for a new team, and is possibly close to working out a deal with the Bengals or even the Raiders. Chad Ochocinco is lobbying for Terrell to come to Cincy. Another big name wide out looking for a new team is sometimes troublesome star Brandon Marshall. Marshall is getting lots of attention from Seattle but it seems like the Jets are also trying to get into the picture. After the retirement of Kurt Warner, the Cardinals are looking for another quarterback to add to its stable, and rumors are that they have their eyes on Charlie Whitehurst or maybe recently released Derek Anderson. Whitehurst is possibly considered the hottest restricted free agent on the market right now. With the draft looming a little over a month away it remains to be seen how many more deals will be made.
In other NFL news, Steelers quarterback “Big Ben” should probably see about changing his nick name to “Big Dummy” after he was accused of another sexual assault inside of a GA nightclub. The incident was reported as happening late Friday night a few weeks ago. Reports are still sketchy but the local police are investigating. Ben is no stranger to these kind of allegations, less than a year ago he lost a civil sexual misconduct case, from a prior incident which reportedly occurred a couple of years back. Criminal charges were pressed in the older case, but the investigation floundered after little evidence was found. It is not my place to say whether he is guilty or not, but I will say that Ben is no doubt guilty of making poor choices, and for putting himself in a bad situation. This is the same guy who wrecked his motorcycle during the off season a few years ago, not wearing any head protection, and almost killing himself in the process. The question has to be asked, how much longer will the Steeler’s front office keep dealing with these off season troubles.
So with all these story-lines this is looking to be a very interesting season in the NFL, and it starts with the draft which is set to start at 7:30 pm on April 22. All of this year’s picks will be televised live on ESPN, and it’s family of networks.
