If you’re feeling a little Lycan in anticipation of ‘The Wolfman’ movie, get that crazy full moon feeling going full force with some great songs about wolves and werewolves. Apparently Benecio Del Toro’s howl in ‘The Wolfman’ is composed in part by howls performed by rock legends David Lee Roth and Gene Simmons, so you’ve got to check out some of the best rock songs about werewolves and wolves before you go see the movie. Rock out to these great songs about werewolves and wolves, and be prepared to feel transformed:
‘Werewolves of London’ by Warren Zevon – This is by far one of my favorite rock songs about werewolves, even if the song doesn’t make them out to be very frightening. The werewolves of London check out Chinese menus and drink pina coladas. But, then again, some of the werewolves in the song rip out lungs and mutilate little old ladies. With addictive piano music, a cool and smooth howl, and a reference to Lon Chaney and Lon Chaney, Jr., you just aren’t going to find rock songs about werewolves better than this one.
‘Hungry Like the Wolf’ by Duran Duran – And here’s one of the best 80’s rock songs about wolves you’ll ever hear. It’s got that distinctive 80’s synthesizer sound with sexy lyrics about hunting an unlucky (or maybe lucky?) Little Red Riding Hood down. And even though werewolves aren’t mentioned in the lyrics, this is one of the songs on this list that could apply to both wolves and werewolves, as it’s about a man experiencing some very Lycan-like symptoms.
‘Clap for the Wolfman’ by The Guess Who – This is one of the only rock songs on this list that’s technically not about wolves or werewolves, but it is titled after the coolest cat to share the Wolfman’s name. The legendary DJ lends his Tom Waits-style voice to one of my favorite rock songs on this list, and even though it doesn’t mention wolves or werewolves, Wolfman Jack’s voice immediately invokes the image of a scary, hairy fanged one drooling on his vinyl (but you’ll still dig him).
‘Of Wolf and Man’ by Metallica – For those looking for metal rock songs about werewolves, you won’t find a more epic one that this. With lyrics like “Off through the new days mist I run; out from the new day’s mist I have come; we shift, pulsing with the earth; company we keep, roaming the land while you sleep”, it’s one of the most mystical, metal, gothic, and dark rock songs about werewolves you’ll ever hear.
‘She-Wolf’ by Shakira – Here’s one of the only songs about werewolves I’ve found by a female artist, more of a pop tune than a rock song. It’s pretty addictive, and a good companion song for ‘Hungry Like the Wolf’, thanks to the distortion. So have fun dancing around the room to one of the only songs about werewolves on this list you can really get down and dirty to, and watch out for what’s hiding in your closet.
‘Lil’ Red Riding Hood’ by Sam the Sham & the Pharaohs – Here’s another of the classic songs on this list here about wolves, of the big bad kind in this case. The suggestive song tells girls wearing red-hot red and wandering around late at night alone to watch out, because many big bad wolves may be lurking about. It’s one of the most fun songs about wolves on this list, and it also has one of the best howls.
‘Bark at the Moon’ by Ozzy Osbourne – And here’s another of the best metal songs about werewolves, and in Ozzy case, I don’t think his bark is worse than his bite (when bats are involved, at least). It’s another of the songs on this list that tells a great mythical tale about werewolves, in this case a hell beast out for vengeance after “years spent in torment buried in a nameless grave”. As always, Ozzy paints a great gothic picture set to some amazing metal.
‘Werewolf’ by Five Man Electrical Band – If you’re looking for more fun and funky songs about werewolves, check out this unique upbeat ditty about a boy named Billy that just ain’t right, and his daddy who wants to save his family with a silver bullet. I love songs that tell a story, and since this one tells a tale about werewolves, it definitely gets extra points.
‘When I Was a Boy I Watched the Wolves’ – By Paul Kantner and Grace Slick – Songs about white rabbits are fun and all, but it’s more exciting to hear Grace Slick sing about werewolves. Of course I could listen to her voice all day, and as one of the longer songs on this list, I love this mythical and mystical tale of lycanthropy.
‘White Mountain’ by Genesis – This is one of the best songs about werewolves music-wise. It definitely has a “days of yore” feel to it, with lyrics about “Fang” and his bloody journey through a jungle of ice. If you’re looking for unique songs about werewolves, this is one you should definitely check out.
So no matter what kind of songs you’re in the mood for: metal, mystical, pop, or classic rock, there’s sure to be some songs about wolves and werewolves here to get you ready for ‘The Wolfman’.
