This is a look back at some of the funniest movies about time travel in honor of one of the newest movies about time travel about to hit theaters, ‘Hot Tub Time Machine’. It’s hard to tell if the tale of a hot tub that takes a group of guys back to the 80’s will be a big hit (a la the hot tub in ‘Jersey Shore’), or if this time travel tale will be a big bore. But regardless of whether you end up liking ‘Hot Tub Time Machine’ or not, you’ve got to check out some of the funniest time travel movies on this list. From DeLorean time machines to shagadelic spies from the past, the funniest movies about time travel prove that screwing around with the space-time continuum isn’t dangerous; it’s hilarious!
Back to the Future – When it comes to the funniest movies about time travel, it’s hard to top this classic about a boy who goes back in time only to have his mom start crushing on him (love the Calvin Klein joke). My favorite part of one of the most beloved movies about time travel, however, is where we discover how ‘Johnny B. Goode’ made a whole generation want to be a little bad (although I think Chuck Berry might have something to say about how the movie portrays the origin of his song).
Back to the Future Part II – Like most movies that just can’t get over themselves, the sequel to the aforementioned time travel flick isn’t quite as good as the original, but you’ve got to love just how similar to the 80’s the future looks (we’ll be there in just five years!). It may not be the best out of the funniest movies about time travel on this list, but it did introduce us to one of the most-coveted toys ever, the hoverboard.
Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me – You’ve got to love one of the funniest movies about time travel you’ll ever see for unleashing Felicity Shagwell and the equally sexy (or so he says) Fat Bastard on the world. Thanks to a time machine, our favorite swingin’ spy (sorry, Bond!) gets to swing back to the sixties to pick up a shagadelic babe. It’s definitely the funniest out of all the Austin Powers movies, and, thanks to time travel, you get Austin to the second power when Austins from two different eras offer double the pleasure in a very happy ending. It’s not just one of the funniest movies about time travel you’ll ever see, but one that’s got some real mojo going for it.
Meet the Robinsons – And here’s one of the best animated movies about time travel, a creative tale that’s a bit like ‘Back to the Future’ for kids, with a dinosaur chase, a look at the family of the future, and a unique plot twist. When it comes to the funniest movies about time travel for the whole family to enjoy, this one about finding a family is definitely one of the best.
Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure – Phonebooths may almost be obsolete here in the future, but it’s still fun to take a trip back in time in one with some Wyld Stallyns from the past in one of the funniest movies about time travel starring Keanu Reeves. When two slacker guys can’t seem to pass history, they get schooled by a mysterious man from the future named Rufus (George Carlin) who must make sure the two learn their lessons to ensure the survival of his future utopian society. So can the two dudes learn that Ceasar is more than a salad dressing by unleashing some historical figures into the end of the 80’s? Learn to be excellent to each other with one of the most bodacious movies about time travel and find out for yourself.
Army of Darkness (Evil Dead III) – This is one of the goriest movies about time travel you’ll see, but it still also manages to be one of the funniest, as chainsaw-armed Ash tries to defeat the army of the dead from the past in order to return to the future. He ends up unlucky in love as always, and learns that you can’t outsmart the book of the dead. It’s not the best of the Evil Dead movies, but it’s one of the weirdest movies about time travel you’ll ever see.
Groundhog Day – This is one of the most original of the funniest movies about time travel on this list, as it focuses on being stuck in time rather than travelling through it. Even though a guy that’s a bit of a jerk (Bill Murray) hates having to replay the same day over and over again to the point of killing himself multiple times, you’ve got to envy him when he eventually realizes that he can use his time wisely (I’d love to learn to speak French and play piano in a day!). When it comes to the funniest movies about time travel that really get creative with how their time is spent, this is by far one of the best.
Time Bandits – And your time will be well-spent watching another of the funniest movies about time travel. Terry Gilliam brings us this magical tale of time-travelling dwarves and the boy that discovers their secret, but don’t let the fantasy plotline fool you; this movie is loaded with laughs (you’ve got to love the darkly comedic ending). So if you’re searching for the holy grail of funny movies about time travel, let pigheaded Og and the gang lead you to this most Fabulous Object in the World.
Family Guy Presents Stewie Griffin: the Untold Story – It’s the only of the time travel movies on this list that was never in theaters, but it’s still one of the funniest movies about time travel you’ll ever see. When Stewie, in disbelief that idiotic Peter could be his real father, spies a man that has his same football-shaped head on the news, he believes that it has to be his real father and sets out to find him (after he tries to kill someone, becomes a “good boy”, and suffers from alcoholism earlier in the movie). As a result of his misadventures, we get a glimpse of the Griffins of the future (including new addition Ron) and learn that time travel vacations will soon be possible. It may not be one of the movies about time travel on this list that became a box office blockbuster, but since I believe Seth MacFarlane will become overlord of all FOX broadcasting companies in the future, it’s definitely one of the most important of the funniest movies about time travel here.
Click – This is one of the many movies about time travel set in an alternate world, one where Adam Sandler is married to a woman much too hot for him and in control of a remote control that can control time. It’s not the best of the movies about time travel on this list, but at least it has Christopher Walken and a somewhat unique storyline going for it (I just wish the “Beyond” section at Bed Bath & Beyond really did exist).
So from time travel remotes to bandit dwarves and skeleton warriors from the past, the funniest movies about time travel on this list give the space-time continuum a whole new twist. So watch a few of these great movies about time travel, and get ready to take another trip while relaxing in the ‘Hot Tub Time Machine’.
